In my 50 plus years of living, I’ve discovered that each of us has a unique and interesting story. There isn’t a person I’ve met that I don’t feel genuine care and curiosity for their story. Woven all throughout my life are some wonderfully unique and colorful people. They’ve added variety, spice and wisdom to my experience as a human being.

These new friends, have so much more in common with me than differences. It seems we are all sometimes a little fearful, sad, lonely, hurt, or worried. Deep down, we all desire the same things-to be understood and loved for exactly who we are right now. We want others to see us for who we are and want to be, our best selves. I think Mr. Fred Rogers said it best when he said...

“Remember, you’re really easy to love just the way you are.”

— Mr. Rogers

My love for people and relationships might explain why I love IFS so much. Getting to know my inner world is like traveling around and getting to know different kinds of people. As I travel around exploring my inner world and my different parts, I see a vast and expansive place of learning, growth and potential! I love listening to their stories. I love meeting all kinds of parts. For me there are no bad parts! Those fearful, sad, angry, lonely or depressed parts are all welcome. Daily I encounter parts that are not very popular, parts that are the life of the party, parts that are shy and parts that are playful and carefree. With each part I meet, whether my own or others’, I find that just a little curiosity and compassion goes a long way to open up the possibilities. I am ever amazed at how the inner physics of each person are so diverse yet so much the same.

My desire to bring my true Self to life and my clients, fuels my desire to be humble and honest with myself about what is happening inside of me with my own parts. Why is this important in an IFS Practitioner? Sometimes we have parts of us that are very attached to the agendas they have for others or ourselves. It is very important in IFS to have the skill, honesty and awareness to recognize this pattern. This ability leaves space for the client and practitioner to work freely and effectively. My clients will sometimes hear me say, “Is that ok if I take a moment and ask one of my parts to relax and give us some space to work?” This skill allows me to bring more compassion, curiosity and presence to what is, all while making the changes and healing permanent for my clients!

You might wonder about that claim and I say to you that is the power of what already lies within you and all of us. The true Self of each of us cannot be broken. It may be hidden but is not and never can be damaged. It is the blueprint and channel within all of us for healing, growth and happiness!
